Express yourself: spotting the innovative ones early.

One of these young artists will grow up to be that innovative artist who wants their exhibition at your venue to include:
  • an installation of locally sourced forest floor mulch arranged wall to wall in a single room (which your conservation team has to spend a ludicrous amount of time fumigating, drying and treating to prevent crawling things infesting the building.)
  • a mural painted live, and directly onto the walls using their human body as a tool.
  • an area of the gallery sectioned off, into a wholly black painted room, containing black painted furniture, and a soundtrack of bees. (which has no lighting, no barriers, and will become a breeding ground for horrific near miss accidents as people wander into it.)
Can you guess which one?

N.B. This image was found rather randomly online, I believe via facebook, without any providence.

I googled "Museum Display Stand" and I got...

When I need to look online for various things, either for reference or to buy something, I like to put to one side the oddities that the internet throws at me, either because the search terms are understandably similar, but the results a bit off kilter, or because something is, perhaps , labelled a bit oddly online. The best results were compiled a while ago here.

Here's the 'eh?' haul from looking for the term "Museum Display Stand"... Click for larger images, if intrigued enough!

Buggering about with animals

Although the staff were pissing ourselves laughing, we had to politely ask the lads posing in front of the taxidermy cabinets, and taking carefully angled photos, as if they were in exciting sexual congress with the animals, to stop.
I’ve tried a couple of times to draw a cartoon for this submitted story, but just can’t do the mental image justice.

Prehistoric humans - off their tits on drugs?

Now this is a quick and interesting little article here - there's a lot of evidence that our ancestors made common use of drugs and hallucinogenics in various forms.

From chewing betel leaves, to magic mushrooms, and of course the fermentation of alcohol, forebears used these for their medicinal, transcendent and stimulant properties.

I once had an archaeology trip to a forsaken lump of rock in the bum end of Wales, which was a prime ceremonial stone axe quarry site. The lecturer suggested that the continued abundance of magic mushrooms in the area may have been present in prehistoric times as well, making the site renowned for visions, and therefore the nearby rock was deemed special.*

So what, you may think? Well, the next time someone wonders "Why did they build Stonehenge etc?" the answer could amusingly be "Cause it was a great spot to pick up drugs" or simply "The rainbow unicorn told them to."

*N.B. If one will tell a group of students that they are stood on a site prime for magic mushrooms, make sure one has presence of mind to advise about not trying them, just to cover one's own back as the educator broadly in charge of them.
