Be kind to yourself

28/5/2021

Has your museum reopened this last week or so?

You may be more knackered than you realise. Your colleagues may be more knackered than you, or they, realise.

🥰 Be patient. With yourself, and those around you.
🌄 Add mental downtime breaks into your day.
👋 Ask people "Really, how are you?" and be open about how you're feeling yourself.

You may find that feeling tired from working in your open museum again won't really hit you until you stop, so plan for gentle time when you are off work.

Let friends and family know you may be mentally exhausted all of a sudden, and ask in advance for a little understanding.

Coronavirus roadmap visitor bingo!

11/5/2021

It was confirmed yesterday that in England, as of May 17th, indoor entertainment venues may reopen, in line with details such as the Rule of 6 or 2 households, social distancing etc, masks.

Your museum, venue or gallery may have had plans for weeks, already announced a date for reopening, perhaps even be taking bookings and selling tickets. Or you may have had to wait for the confirmation of changes before your management were willing to confirm and say anything. You might even be in a difficult place of being unable to reopen, or unwilling to just yet.

Either way, I bet that there's an uptick in your query emails, so to help as the same answers need to keep being provided in a chipper tone, how about a game of bingo?

It's time for another round of "Hi, this email contains plans and dates based off the assumption of the museum reopening on May 17th, but we have no idea if that'll happen, but we need to plan for something, so that we have a plan we can adjust as required."

If a contractor drops a tool during extensive conservation work, and there's a guided hard hat tour near by, does anyone hear it?
Yes.

How well do we reach visitors with announcements?

  • Since the end of January ish we prominently listed our Easter opening hours on our website, and mentioned this on social media.
  • In the building we has posters with the Easter opening hours.
  • In website blogs and updates we occasionally called back to the Easter opening hours.
  • In the run up to Easter we posted regular reminders, and links to the website Easter opening hours, on social media.
  • In the week before Easter our email newsletter listed our Easter opening hours.

Someone has blamed us of “only announcing you were closed on social media when it was pretty much your opening time".

On the one hand, do you not check opening hours before driving for miles at Easter?
On the other, have we fallen down here?

Ask A Curator - September 13th 2017

12/9/2017

Tomorrow (September 13th) is Ask A Curator Day, and it’s a chance for people inside and outside of collections, museums, galleries and heritage venues to connect and chat -  with an impressive 1519 museums taking part!

It can be a good way to educate people on what curators actually do, open minds about what your collection holds and how it can be relevant. It can be a fun way to share and explore. Sometimes, the questions asked can lead to rethinking what visitors are interested in and would like to know more about.

You’ll find  #AskACurator being used on Instagram and twitter, so have a look, and see what is being nattered about.

If you want to see who is taking part, or be more involved (last minute!) see the details and sign your venue up here: http://www.mardixon.com/wordpress/askacurator-who-to-ask-sept-14-2016/
