Edit: I just found out that this was a film location for V for Vendetta.
As we have a framed copy of the movies poster above our dining table, I am now squeeing twice as much...

The 1980's was my favorite answer. Because when you are 8, that was forever ago.
Just had this group in, so a quick lunchtime sketch of the cuties, who were so eager and excited that they would cheerfully answer any question with almost absolute certainty, regardless of the answer they were giving. The question here is paraphrased, as it included a description of what we call a period of history (like the Tudors) and asked about a period of history we study "in a hot and dry country, with lots of gods and goddesses, where they buried their kings and queens with all their treasure" I was looking for Egyptians, which they correctly yelled as soon as I made a pyramid shape with my hands. Those times when you feel like suggesting that the tourists go and take the costumed guided tour and banquet, rather than visiting the historical venue and ignoring the staff there.
Yes, Nottingham is famed for Robin Hood, yes working here one has to get used to frequent questions and some difficult conversations, but the real gemstones are those people who care for NOTHING else. 100's of caves - Did the merry men use them? Isabella and Mortimer - Did Robin Hood sneak into the castle through Mortimer's hole as well? Start of the English Civil War - Yeah! fighting against the ruling classes like Robin Hood did!
Can get a bit grating when trying to run a guided tour for a wider group, and a section tries to steer it continually towards A FICTIONAL OCCURRENCE with NO bearing on the events, location, persons or time-frame. However, the scope to wind the more strident folks up is immeasurable. "Yup, some people say this was a wine cellar, but really Little John lived here while pretending to work for the castle. Want me to take your picture in here?" ![]() Well, it would be remiss to not mention that it's Halloween, especially given that many museum and heritage staff find themselves are some point working in old and rather odd buildings... Whatever you believe, from it being hysteria and hokum, through to a genuine ability to communicate with those in a life beyond living, there's no denying that some places make you plain uncomfortable, and it's sort of fun and interesting to poke that feeling. You can scratch a supernatural itch with http://www.hauntedhappenings.co.uk who access amazing places such as Leeds Old Asylum (now Thackray Medical Museum) Tatton Old Hall and Oxford castle. Not flashy with actors jumping out, the folks have the kit to try and record and investigate what's going on, to try and se what it's all about. I would love to do their Alton Towers tour. At some point I need to wholly document the time when 'Most Haunted' filmed at Staircase House (hilarious for all the wrong reasons) but for now here's a cracking video about exploring a museum in Indiana.
