"Hello, I'm phoning from X large hotel, we get a lot of queries about local places to visit, would you be willing to send some promotional literature so we can direct people to your venue as a place of interest?
Um, could you explain to me what it is your visitor center is actually about?..... blah.... Oh, I didn't know that was what you did, it sounds quite odd.... Would you be interested in promoting any of our special offers or deals for accommodation? Either to offer visitors or for your own staff? No? Oh, ok then.... Incidentally, I've seen your Facebook page and think it's very good. We're new to social media, could you give me any advice?" Would you like me to wipe your bum for you as well?

I love the visitors who ask where we are, can we give directions, what is the best method of travel, how often those buses are, where do they run from, how much does it cost? Is there anything else to do or see near by, how much does that cost, is it suitable for kids, is there anywhere I would reccomend to eat? And then ask if we could suggest a place to stay, not too expensive, but good quality... I have to bite back if they rang the art gallery by accident when they thought they were calling tourist information.

Happens more often than you think. When I interned at Time Out, we'd often get calls from researchers mistaking the magazine's news desk for a tourist information service.

Erm, how does that work then? Calling a visitor venue about visiting them, and then tailing off into a million questions I sort of understand, but Time Out magazine?!

Lazy researchers, basically. They'd want to know something obscure about a city and phone and ask us. I think some of them thought that if they name dropped the organisation they worked for we'd be so impressed we'd drop everything and read out the reams of research we had over the phone.
