Over the past few weeks we've had our site engineering team do a refit of our museum, Nice new ceiling with lighting built in, new colour scheme for the walls, new information panels stuck up and the glory (finally) of an air con/heating system. It has, however, been a little like undergoing moving house and birth at the same time. (granted, I haven't done the second, but know enough from those who have) There's a lot of packing, preparing, worry, plans, then handing over to people you know are trained professionals, but well, you're in their hands and only know about two-thirds of what they're talking about. Then a lot of panic as everything you are familiar with is upheaved, routine disturbed, plans go wrong and must be adapted, the angst and hope combined of "It shouldn't look like that?! Surely it will look better soon?! This doesn't feel right!". Finally the relief of a finished, beautiful product, and the dawning realisation that there's a lot of tidying up to do still, it isn't actually over yet, and you now need to maintain this thing to the right standards to keep everyone satisfied with thier new high expectations.
In short, worth the trouble, but providing a lot more trouble than you could ever expect and with ramifications far beyond the end of the project itself.
